Invitation and
Conference Themes

Invitation

The previous Urban Drainage Modelling conferences were held twice in Dubrovnik, on the Volga river, London, Orlando, Dresden and Melbourne. The eighth UDM conference (8UDM) in Tokyo, Japan which will be the first conference in this series to be held in an Asian county.

There has been a growing concern on environmental problems in big cities especially on water issues (e.g. urban flooding, control of associated pathogens and degradation of surface water qualities). In this context, urban drainage modelling issues are playing an important role tackling the persistent environmental problem and problem solving constraints for many Mega-cities. The spread of the modelling knowledge and related expertise have been very limited so far in Asian countries. By organizing the 8UDM in Tokyo the hosts hope to attract contributions from the participants in the previous conferences but moreover to encourage the participants from other Asian countries. The conference is planned to build the cooperation bridge and to share and transfer the knowledge and technology between the developed and developing countries for the improvement of urban water environment in the future. In order to attain more participation from various countries, we are planning to organize a special session after the opening session. The theme of the special session would be "Rainwater and urban drainage management in Asian countries", which would be interesting to all participants.

Another conference will be held in the same place, which is 2nd International Conference on Rainwater Harvesting and Management. The topics of the two parallel conferences are, undoubtedly, linked close and the organizing committees have decided to provide a common registration for the two conferences: you can attend to both once you register to one of the conferences.

On behalf of the organizing committee, we would like to invite interested researchers/experts to send their contributions/papers to the conference.

Conference Themes

The scientific and engineering content deals with topics related to modelling the urban drainage system and the interactions with other urban water systems and urban environment.  The conference is designed to bring together specialists – researchers, and practitioners – to exchange experiences, to demonstrate present potentials and to identify needs of urban drainage modelling. Both, theoretical and practical developments and applications will be presented. Especially in this 8UDM, we encourage the participation from Asian countries to invite the papers on Rainwater and Urban Drainage Management issues.

  • Data availability and reliability (data uncertainty) for UDM
  • Rainwater and Urban drainage management in Asian countries
  • Effects of climate changes trends and scenarios on the urban drainage system
  • Urban flooding analysis and modeling, urban flood forecasting and risk analysis
  • UDM under extreme conditions
  • GIS support to UDM (data resolution, emerging technologies and cost)
  • Interaction of urban drainage system with urban aquatic habitat (hydro-ecology and urban amenities)
  • Performance trends, indicators and life span assessment
  • Socio-economic interactions and modelling tools and results for communications with and involvement of stakeholders
